A PATTERN IN THE CENTERDeep in the human brain are several structures essential to survival, regulation, and awareness. Among them are three that, while not formally grouped by neuroscience as a triad, occupy a strikingly central position: ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;the Pineal gland. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;the Pituitary gland. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;the Thalamus.These are not mystical objects. They are measurable, studied, biologically defined.What can be said, carefully and accurately, is this:⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;The pineal gland regulates circadian rhythm through melatonin secretion, responding indirectly to light cycles. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;The pituitary gland plays a central role in hormonal regulation, influencing growth, stress response, and reproduction, and ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;The thalamus acts as a major relay for sensory information, channeling signals (with the exception of smell) toward conscious processing.They are not a “hidden triad” in scientific literature. But they are central, influential, and physically proximate within the deep structures of the brain.That is anatomy, not my interpretation. THE LIMITS OF THE “THIRD EYE”There is a long-standing fascination with the pineal gland as a “third eye.”This idea has a partial biological root. In some reptiles, such as the Tuatara, there exists a parietal eye, a light-sensitive structure connected to circadian regulation. Evolutionarily, the human pineal gland is related to these systems.But precision matters for our clarity:The human pineal gland is not an eye. It does not see. It does not directly detect light.Any connection between it and the phrase “single eye” in Matthew 6:22 is interpretive, not scientific. That distinction does not invalidate the symbolism, but it must be named honestly as symbolism. MISNAMES AND MEANINGSThe history of anatomy includes its own misunderstandings. The term “pituitary” traces back to pituita, Latin for mucus, because the physician Galen believed the gland drained fluids from the brain. That theory was wrong, but the name remained.This is not unusual.&nbsp; Language often lags behind our knowledge. But it does not follow that because something was once misunderstood, its deeper meaning aligns with a separate symbolic system. That step, from correction to correspondence, must be made carefully, or not at all. THE “INNER CHAMBER” The Thalamus sits near the center of the brain and plays a critical role in relaying sensory information. Its name comes from the Greek thalamos, meaning “inner room” or “chamber.” That linguistic fact is real.But here again, precision matters for our clarity:Etymology tells us how something was named. It does not determine what it means biologically.Still, the image lingers, an inner chamber, a place through which perception passes before reaching awareness. Not a mystical claim, but a poetic one grounded in a real anatomical function. DO THESE THREE FORM A SINGLE SYSTEM? They do not form a unified “triad” in neuroscience.⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;The pineal gland is part of circadian regulation. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;The pituitary operates within the endocrine system, under the influence of the hypothalamus. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;The thalamus is part of a broader network involved in sensory processing and consciousness.They are connected indirectly, but not as a single three-part structure with shared control over a unified system.What they share is not a formal classification, but location and significance. THE GIFTS, REVISITED Back in Matthew, the three gifts carry symbolic weight that has been recognized for centuries:Gold is associated with kingship. Frankincense is associated with ritual and divinity. Myrrh is associated with death and burial.This triad forms a theological statement about identity and destiny.It is not presented as biology.It is presented as meaning. CAN THE SUBSTANCES AFFECT THE BRAIN?There is limited scientific research on these materials: ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Frankincense has been studied for anti-inflammatory properties and possible neurological effects (primarily in animal studies). ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Myrrh has documented medicinal uses, including antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Gold has had medical applications, though not as a direct, symbolic agent of consciousness.What cannot be claimed, based on current evidence, is that these three substances form a scientifically validated triad acting on specific brain structures in a coordinated way.That idea goes beyond the data. WHAT REMAINS WHEN WE REMOVE THE OVERREACHIf we separate fact from interpretation, something interesting still stands: ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;A text that emphasizes three gifts, not three figures. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;A brain with multiple central structures of high importance. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;A long human tendency to organize meaning into triads.The connection between these is not historical proof.So, let us just call it symbolic resonance.And symbolic resonance does not need to pretend to be science in order to be meaningful. THE STRONGER CLAIMThe durable insight is not that Matthew encoded neuroanatomy.There is no evidence for that.I think the stronger, defensible claim is this:Human beings consistently organize meaning, biological, theological, and narrative, into patterns of three. The story of the Magi reflects that pattern symbolically through its gifts, and modern readers continue to recognize and reinterpret that structure through the lens of contemporary knowledge, including neuroscience. FINAL BIND LINEThere are three gifts in the text.There are many structures in the brain.Any connection between them is not a discovery of hidden anatomy in scripture, but a reflection of how the human mind, across time, builds meaning: in patterns, in triads, in the quiet space between what is written, and&nbsp; what we cannot help but see.

Three Masters at Golgotha

There are moments in history where the confluence of ideology, disaster, and opportunity create an inferno, one that reshapes the course of human destiny. The fifteenth century was one such moment, a cataclysmic fusion of the Reconquista, religious fervor, the devastation of the Black Plague, and the boundless wealth of Africa. It was a storm of ambition and blood, faith and betrayal, war and commerce, a storm that birthed an empire and unleashed a new order upon the world, one built on the backs of the enslaved.It is here that we must reflect, not with the gaze of passive observers, but with the sharpened eye of the Initiate, tracing the hidden architecture of power and profit. The past is not merely to be studied; it is to be reckoned with. And so, we must reckon with the bitter truths of this age and the forces that shaped it. The Reconquista and the Eternal Struggle For nearly eight centuries, the Iberian Peninsula was a land of war, a shifting battlefield between Christian and Muslim forces. The Moors, heirs to a vast civilization of mathematics, architecture, and philosophy, held dominion. Yet the Christians, driven by a singular obsession, waged their Reconquista, a holy war to reclaim what they believed was rightfully theirs. When Portugal finally expelled the Moors, its gaze turned southward, toward Africa, toward the lands where gold and power flowed like the great River Niger.The capture of Ceuta in 1415 was more than a military conquest; it was an unveiling. Behind its walls, Portugal beheld a system already in motion, gold caravans from Mali, salt from Taghaza, and human chattel bound in chains. Africa was not an unknown world to the Moors, they were African. Nor to the Africans who had long traded in human flesh. Here lies an uncomfortable truth: Africans, for centuries, had been merchants in the trade of others, not yet their own, but of Slavic captives, war prisoners from Eastern Europe, known as “Slavs,” from which the very word slave is derived. This was a commerce driven, not by race, but by conquest and circumstance. Hence, the African Slav(e) Trade.Yet the European innovation, the uniquely diabolical ingenuity, was the transformation of slavery from an act of war into a birthright of black skin. It was here, in this perfect storm of ideology, that human bondage became not a matter of religion or conquest, but of color. And with Portugal’s maritime reach, the world would never be the same again. The Black Plague and the Desperation for Expansion When the Black Death swept through Europe, it did not merely take lives—it unmade kingdoms. 1346 to 1353, it was one of the most fatal pandemics in human history; as many as 50 million people perished, perhaps 50% of Europe's 14th century population. The fields lay barren, the feudal lords found themselves masters of empty lands, and the European economy staggered on weakened legs. In the wake of such devastation, the hunger for renewal became a hunger for expansion. Where there were no workers, there would be slaves. Where there was no wealth, there would be plunder.This is how crisis breeds conquest. The same Europe that prayed for deliverance from the plague turned to Africa for salvation, not in spirit, but in flesh. The Portuguese were the first to seize this moment. Prince Henry, ever the architect of empire, dispatched his fleets to the coasts of Guinea and beyond, seeking gold, land, and bodies. And so began the most systematic exploitation of human labor in history, a practice that would metastasize into the transatlantic slave trade, chaining the destiny of Africa to the wealth of Europe. The Fractured Kingdoms of the Sahel Yet Africa was not a passive victim in this tale. She was not the sleeping giant caught unaware by foreign ambition. Gao, Mali, Songhai, these were empires of grandeur, of scholarship, of trade. But they were also divided. The great Mansa "Kan Kan"Musa had once flooded the markets of Cairo with so much gold that its value plummeted for a decade. Yet his heirs, and the rulers of Songhai who followed, warred over different interpretations of Islam, over rightful succession, and over fleeting earthly power. As Europe consolidated under singular crowns, Africa remained splintered, fractured by internal rivalries. And where there is division, there is vulnerability. Portugal did not conquer Africa with its navy alone, it conquered through deception, through alliances, through the old art of divide, conquer, and rule. For every kingdom that resisted, another saw profit in selling its neighbor. And so, the cycle began. What one nigger won't do, another nigger will. The Alchemy of Empire: Turning Flesh into Gold The Portuguese took what they learned in Ceuta and refined it. The plantations of Madeira and São Tomé became laboratories for a new economy, sugar, worked by African hands, bound by European chains. Here was the Irish prototype for the New Americas, the blueprint for Brazil, the Caribbean, the American South, and adjoining islands. It was not merely labor that was stolen, it was time, it was bloodlines, it was entire legacies unmade and rewritten, and written and rewritten in the ledgers of European wealth.The slave forts along the coasts of Ghana and Senegal were more than prisons. They were gates to another world, a world where humanity was reduced to cargo, where the worth of a man was measured in weight, where children were sold before they could speak their own names. A world where Africans were not human and therefore outside of God's grace. Portugal was the first in 1423, but it would not be the last. Spain, England, France, the Dutch, all followed, feeding from the table that Portugal had set. Uncomfortable Truths and the Duty of the Initiate And now, my peoples, what do we do with these truths? Do we flinch?&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Do we turn away? Or do we, like those who seek light, stand firm and look into the abyss? History does not exist for our comfort. It exists to be reckoned with, to be understood, transformed, and transcended. What happened in those fateful years was not inevitable, it was engineered. It was a storm of human design, built on greed, on faith twisted into justification, on ambition unchained from morality. Yet in every darkness, there are those who resisted. There were the Maroons, who escaped, built quilumbos, and waged war against their oppressors. Sometimes with white allies. There were the revolts on the ships, and the whispers of rebellion that never made it into the history books. There were those who, even in chains, knew themselves to be free. And so, we are left with a choice. To merely remember or to reclaim? To merely study or to transform? For the initiate, the past is prologue, but never prophecy. The Great Work is ours to complete for continuum. Let us then move forward, unapologetic, unflinching, and enlightened.

The Perfect Storm for Empire: A Reflective Meditation

Open the text and see with your eyes. Not the tradition you were born into. Not the paintings you've seen. Not the nativity scenes you help put together every Christmas. The text and the text alone. In the Gospel of Matthew, the only gospel that tells this story, we are given a detail a lot of people have never actually examined:Visitors arrive. They bring three gifts.But the text never tells you how many visitors there were.That is not my interpretation. That is a fact.The Greek word used is 'Magi'. Plural. Nothing more. Two would satisfy it. Twenty would satisfy it. The number is absent because the author never supplied us with one.And yet, across centuries, across continents, across cultures, the story stabilizes into something far more specific:Three men. Early Christian readers, trained in symbolic and typological interpretation, read Matthew through that lens and made a connection:If kings bring gifts to the chosen one…and gifts are being brought here…then these figures can be understood as kings.That is not a textual claim. It is a theological move.And over time, the move becomes memory and that memory becomes tradition. NAMES WITHOUT ORIGINCaspar. Melchior. Balthasar.These names do not appear in Matthew. They do not appear anywhere in the New Testament.They emerge centuries later, around the 6th century, in Latin and Greek Christian traditions.By then, the story is no longer just being read.It is being filled in and fatten up.Expanded. Localized. Personalized.Not rewritten, but completed in the imagination of communities who wanted detail where the text had left space. WHO WERE THE MAGI, REALLY?The original word matters.Magi does not mean “wise men” in the modern sense. That translation smooths over something far more specific.In the ancient world, the term referred to figures associated with eastern, particularly Persian, religious and intellectual traditions, often linked to what we now call Zoroastrianism.They were:Observers of the heavens. Interpreters of celestial signs. Ritual specialists.In other words: astrologer-priests.Not kings. Not generic sages. And not reducible to the modern idea of “magicians” either.Matthew’s audience would have recognized them as outsiders, religious specialists from beyond Israel, reading the sky and arriving at a conclusion.That detail is not accidental. THE STAR THAT DOES NOT BEHAVE LIKE A STARMatthew describes a star that:A.&nbsp; &nbsp; Leads travelers. B.&nbsp; &nbsp; Moves directionally, and C. &nbsp; &nbsp;“stands over” a specific location.By modern astronomical understanding, no star behaves this way. Stars do not navigate roads. They do not localize over individual houses.So what are we looking at...here?There are only a few possibilities:1. &nbsp; &nbsp;A literal event described in non-technical language. 2. &nbsp; &nbsp;An astronomical phenomenon interpreted through ancient worldview. 3. &nbsp; &nbsp;A literary or theological construction serving narrative purpose.What can be said with certainty is this:The description does not match known stellar behavior.Which means the text is not functioning as modern astrophysics.It is doing something else. TWO STORIES, TWO AGENDASNow place Matthew beside the Gospel of Luke.Both describe the birth of Jesus. But they do not tell the same story.Matthew gives us: ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Magi from the east ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;A star ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Herod’s paranoia, and ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;A flight into EgyptLuke gives us:⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Shepherds ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;A manger&nbsp; ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Temple rituals, and ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;A return to NazarethLuke 2:39 plainly states that after fulfilling the law, the family returned to Galilee.Matthew describes a detour into Egypt to escape Herod.These are not small differences. They are structurally different narratives.Most scholars do not treat them as two camera angles on the same event. They are understood as independent infancy narratives, each shaped by theological intention:⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Matthew emphasizes fulfillment, kingship, and parallels to Moses. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Luke emphasizes humility, universality, and social reversal.Different aims. Different constructions. THE SILENCE OUTSIDE THE TEXTMatthew alone records: ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;The visiting magi. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;The guiding star. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;The massacre of infants.No other gospel includes these events.Outside the New Testament, the historian Flavius Josephus, who documents the brutality of Herod in detail, does not mention a massacre in Bethlehem.That does not prove the event did not happen.But it does establish something precise:There is no independent historical confirmation of it. SO, WHAT IS THIS STORY...REALLY?Strip away everything added later, names, crowns, fixed numbers, and what remains is this:An account, preserved in a single source, describing: ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Unnamed eastern priest-astrologers. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Interpreting a celestial sign. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Arriving to honor a child, and ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Offering three symbolically charged gifts.The gifts are the only stable number in the entire narrative.And they carry meaning:⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Gold is associated with kingship. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Frankincense is associated with divinity and ritual. ⦁ &nbsp; &nbsp;Myrrh is associated with death and burial.A triad.&nbsp;Not of men, but of meaning. THE QUESTION REFINEDSo the real question is not:“Why are there three wise men?”Because the text never says there are.The real question is:Why did later tradition feel the need to complete the story, to match the number of givers to the number of gifts, to crown them, to name them, to fix them?The answer is not hidden.Humans stabilize stories.We resolve ambiguity. We align symbols. We turn open narratives into closed forms. We fill in the blanks.&nbsp;Three gifts demanded symmetry. Symmetry produced three figures. And repetition turned inference into certainty. WHY DO THREE GIFTS SHOW UP WHEN THREE MEN DO NOT?

In the beginning, they say there was a garden... lush, lush with the unspoken. No barbed wire. No border. No badge.And in this sacred space, they say, a Man and a Woman walked naked without shame... without knowledge.But they did not know. Did not know that hunger could be crime. Did not know that questions could be rebellion. Did not know that obedience, without understanding, was the first plantation.They ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.And for that,they were punished. Exiled. Banished for seeking to know.Yet...before the bite, they didn’t know wrong from right.So we ask, again, as all who’ve ever stood on trial should: How can you condemn someone for a crime they didn’t know was a crime? Is justice truly just, when knowledge comes only after the sentence?Now… shift your gaze.From Eden to Elmina. From Paradise to Port-au-Prince. From Genesis to Jamestown.Ask: What Tree did the African eat from, to be cast out of their own lands? Cast out of Humanity? Cast of of God's grace? What fruit did the Congo bite that made the King of Belgium carve hands from children like spoiling bananas?Was it evil to know the rhythm of drums? The codes hidden in cowrie shells? The divine names whispered before the Nile had a nation?Did we not walk naked, too? Before they dressed us in chains? And like the first Man, were we not blamed before we knew the rules of the conqueror’s God?"We didn’t know it was wrong," the child says. "We didn’t know it was wrong," the stolen say. "We didn’t know it was wrong," the rebel, the runaway, the raped.But the whip didn’t care. The court didn’t care. The gods of empire did not wait for us to eat fruit... they fed us steel and scripture at once.And when we bit back, they said we were savage.Pause.Reflect.In every courtroom of conquest, the same trick repeats:First, deny them knowledge. Then, criminalize their ignorance. Then, punish their awakening.It happened in Eden. It happened in 1619. It happens still... in classrooms that erase, in textbooks that lie, in legislatures that whitewash.Ask yourself:Who taught you what was right? Who benefits from your definition of wrong? What fruits have you refused because someone told you they were forbidden? What trees have you been told to fear? And who planted them?Technically, the serpent did not lie. “Eat, and your eyes shall be opened.” He just left out the price of vision. He didn’t mention the exile, the curse of consciousness, the pain that comes from knowing while living among the willfully blind.But the first lie... that knowing is sin... was spoken not by the serpent, but by those who feared what we might do if we ever remembered who we are.Baldwin said: “To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time.”And Toni Morrison whispered: “The function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work.”But I tell you: The function of deception is divine control. And the antidote is divine disobedience.Not lawless. Not reckless. But a holy rebellion rooted in love, in memory, in truth.So eat. Eat from every tree they told you not to. Taste your history. Bite into your brilliance. Digest your pain, your prophecy, your possibility.Let it stir you. Let it unsettle you. Let it guide you to ask:What gods have I obeyed without question? What empires have I upheld with my silence? What knowledge have I feared because it might free me? What exile am I willing to risk… for truth?This is your Garden. This is your Trial. This is your Trapdoor.Will you open it?Let love be the question. Let justice be the answer. Let truth be the road, even when it leads you away from everything you’ve ever known.Ase.

The Tree, The Trial, and the Trap: A Reflective Muse On First Fruits, Forbidden Knowledge, and the Wounds of Awakening

Did they know right from wrong or just the warmth of breath, the pulse of light, the dew on unbranded skin?They walked with God in the cool of the day, yet didn’t know shame until knowledge came— So, how can you blame a child who never knew that fire burns, until it blistered them?How do you punish ignorance as though it were defiance?Is that justice? Or is that control? Or worse... is it the blueprint? II. Whips, Books, and the Bark of TreesFast forward from Eden to cotton rows— where another people, unknowing of "wrong," were told they were beasts,chained in the belly of a wooden Leviathan, their tongues torn from their truths, but forced to confess with borrowed names.How do you tell a man it's sinful to run, when he's never tasted freedom? Is that not like Eden all over again? "Don't eat from that tree." "Don't read from that book." Revelation by RevolutionSo, here we are—descendants of exiled gods, still biting fruit, still bleeding for it.But what if the real sin was not in disobedience, but in accepting the terms of the story?What if knowledge wasn’t a curse, but the awakening? “The Tree of What?”  A Reflective Muse, refined through Fire and Depth

They said it was about improvement. They always say that first.Not control, improvement.Not elimination, prevention.Not power, progress.And if you listen close enough, you can still hear the echo, not in the old halls, not in the dusty laws,but humming inside servers, whispering through policies, coded in the quiet math that decides who gets seen and who gets sorted.They drew a line once. Clean. Simple. White. Colored.And when the science failed, when no test could prove it, they said:“Look at the face.” " Measure the Cranium" “Check the record.” “Trust the system.”And the system said: close enough.Close enough to deny a marriage. Close enough to rewrite a birth. Close enough to erase a people with ink that called itself truth.Don’t rush past that.Because the lie wasn’t just the line, it was the confidence that the line could be drawn at all.Now watch.The language changes. It always does.No one says “defective” anymore.
